Councils exempt from proper accountability?     26-Nov-09 10:55 AM
I am a ratepayer - as such today I have received a scrimpy set of accounts from my local council

in those accounts there is no detail of important matters such as
-the cost and indeed any liabilities for final salary pension schemes
-councilors’ pay and benefits

instead - such important detail is 'merged' into other costs of 'services'

it is easy guys - pay myself huge salaries and expenses - then 'attribute' my work to a good cause - ensure the costs are included as a part of that good cause - and hey presto - I am happy, my well paid employees are happy - and sod the voters

so my simple questions are:

why are councils not obliged to publish accounts to the same standards as companies?

why are councilors’ pay and expenses not available on line?

and have those details available on line. I live in the Mole Valley - if those details are there - they are well hidden from view!!!!!

of course Councilors are less corrupt than MPs!!!!!!!!! allegedly!

wellllllllll

The accounts summary did indicate a weblink- and that did not work.....

so I searched and searched - the accounts are there - and the pensions figures are huge - and the implications of one set of assumptions or another are huge. So I am none the wiser really

I tried to find out whether the council had considered changing to money purchase schemes like the rest of the country (govt which protects its pensions!) - no success - eventually I got a name - Angela Griffiths - no response. Tried phoning my local councillor - answerphone

in short am bored

someone somewhere should care - and be challanging whether the country can afford final salary pension schemes for public sector employees - when such is now a rare extravagance in the private sector

end of moan/blog

It will be funny though 30 or so years from now when retired Public Sector pensioners pass by in new BMWs wearing designer suits, whilst their contemporary Private Sector pensioners ride along on old bicycles wearing clothes purchased from Oxfam ......?
