Best SIPPS providers?      5-Feb-07 02:20 PM
Hi,

I've been looking to take more of a direct role in pension by starting a SIPP in addition to an occupational pension.

I know that Hargreaves Landsdown have what seems to be an okay one, and I'm exploring others.

Does anyone have an recomendatons as to SIPP providers and why they've decided to use them?

Thanks,
G

Try Selftrade - who offer sipps as part of their portfolio. Good website - very easy dealing and low charges

At www.selftrade.co.uk

Gerard, on what basis do you think that the HG SIPP is only just OK.

It's a product widely regarded as being one of the best in the market.

Granted, what pointed me in the direction of the HL Sipp was an award from the Investors Chronicle. But you still have to take these things with a pinch of salt! :)

I am with H-L and I think they are ok too. There charges are not the cheapest. There sharedealing charges are too high. It starts at 14.95 and goes upto 29.95 for transactions above 20k. I am thinking moving mine SIPP to III as they only charge a £10 flat rate for all share transactions.

I have used Sippdeal for many years as they have no annual charges or set up fees. I have never had any major problems using their service.

I have used Sippdeal in conjunction with Self Trade since June. I looked at Hargreaves Lansdown, & whilst their fees looked low at first glance, their dealing costs for shares are higher & there also seems to be a higher level of admin charges once you buy shares in your portfolio with them. If you only want to buy funds, then HL may work out cheaper. However Self Trade dealing charges of £12.50 could outweigh their own slightly higher admin charges, depending upon how often you trade

I put my money with Barclays stockbrokers, and have to say the service is excellent (visit www.stockbrokers.barclays.co.uk). The underlying admin is done by SIPPdeal, and so far no mistakes of any kind. For a comparison of SIPP options, there are tables of comparisons available at www.investorschronicle.co.uk

Enjoy

Hi

I have been running a small account with Alliance Trust, Dundee for two years.

I chose them for cheapness, as the fund concerned is small - under £25,000 at present.

Dealing charges are low, at £12 or so for equities. They charge £1 each time they collect a dividend. There are no annual service charges, and they are an ethical organisation to deal with.

They have recently started to allow AIM in their ranges, which is useful if you want to protect non-trading companies from CGT.

Downside is that you do not have a personal relationship, which is very useful if you want to buy thinly traded shares.

When looking at other providers, note that some e.g TD Waterhouse require you to have and pay for a separate custodial service.

See my earlier reply re Sippdeal/Self Trade. It's not Self Trade that levy admin charges, its Sippdeal, but the principle remains the same

I am currently being pressured to Merge and old policy with a new with Norwich union and I have a chance to look at 'other' pensions. I am currently looking at SIPP pensions becuase Norwich Union will charge me 0.85% Annual charge on the value of the policy and only allow one investment switch per year so I keen to look at an alternative..... HELP!!!!!

I and my wife use sippdeal and also sippdealxtra. They are very good and do what they say with no hidden charges. We looked around before deciding and campared with HL who wanted a financial adviser to get involved to transfer from a SSAS. Sippdeal did the transfer without any problem

Gerard. It may depend on how you plan to use it. If you are going to be a Day Trader, someone like TDW or E*TRADE ( £8.50 per trade) ,which I use, would be suitable. If not a Day Trader, but still want to invest in individual shares, Collective Investments ( Unit Trusts, OEICS, Investment Trusts, ETFs etc) and the odd "Structured Investment" , you might be better not going down the SIPP route at all.
Get a good IFA to show you "Transact". This is an on-line investment and management tool ( a so-called WRAP Account )which gives you the investor on-line daily pricing, personal dealing and a management/monitoring tool for all your assets. Look at the demo on " www.transact-online.co.uk".

I've also been comparing Sippdeal and HL recently. I've decided to go with Sippdeal, as I just want to infrequently buy funds (probaby the HSBC FTSE 250 tracker) and then leave them to grow without much maintenance (hence me wanting a tracker).

Sippdeal will do this for a one off purchase fee of £20, whereas HL want 0.5%+VAT every year.

Also, if I ever want to change my SIPP provider in future then Sippdeal's exit charges are less than HL's.

I set up a Hargreaves Lansdown SIPP earlier this year and transferred in three existing funds. I have to say that I cannot fault them. No set up charges, most or all of the initial charges offset and a proportion of the AMCs for the funds I bought. I selected the funds online and monitor them daily. I'm so impressed that my wife is now setting up a SIPP with them and we've both taken out share ISAs with them too.

Take up the trial and you can download thier Retirement Planning Supplement they gave away with a previous issue, seems like a fair deal.
