I do feel sorry for Merv. I think he is basically a well meaning highly conservative economist. He was led into a crazy world where he was asked to solve the unsolveable and unlike a politician - greasy Gordon or over energetic Darling - he could not talk his way round by spin, or being economic with the truth. Basically he has to talk cobblers where what he would rather say is "I have not got a clue what will happen".
